ROOTS & SHOOTS AWARDS 2018 – HONOUR FOR PROMOTING SUSTAINABILITY

It was a moment of pride and honour for PIES when we represented our school in the prestigious Roots & Shoots Awards, held on 25th January 2018, organized  by Dr. Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots institute in association with the environment Agency Abu Dhabi.  The function was held at the Park Hyatt hotel in Saadiyat Island. PIES was presented with the  Roots & Shoots Awards 2018 in recognition of our contribution in achieving a better world for people, animals and environment.

Dr. Jane Goodall is a renowned ethnologist and conservationist.Considered to be the world’s foremost expert on chimpanzees, Goodall is best known for her over 55-year study of social and family interactions of wild chimpanzees.  She is the founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and the Roots & Shootsprogramme, and she has worked extensively on conservation and animal welfare issues.

A team of five students – Devananda Manoj, Adithya Sathyanath, Kalyani Jijith, Ishita Sabarwal and Sai Rahul accompanied by our mentor Mrs. Usha Kumari represented the school at the Awards function.

We created the charts and models for display, all of which were based on environmental projects that the school had undertaken such as the ‘Say no to plastic campaign’, ‘A ride to safe disposal of e-waste’, ‘Grow Your Food’&’Save Health programme’.

While presenting the projects, we got an opportunity to interact with Dr. Jane Goodall, who commented that it was refreshing to see the youth working together for a unified movement to save nature.

The room was filled with 12 shortlisted schools and their projects. So, we were exposed to interact with the representatives from other schools and learned a lot from each and every project we came across, acquiring tons of new ideas in the process, which we can’t wait to try out.

We also shared our leading project, A ride to safe disposal of e-waste, with all the delegates of Roots& Shoots and the representatives from other schools.  Our presentation was well appreciated by everyone and students and teachers from other schools enquired details of the same and shared their interest to join with us to dispose e-waste safely to become a part of the mission Climate Force Challenge 2041 by Robert Swan.

The great success of the venture was that it provided us a platform to share our best practices with 12 schools. Being in that room made us feel like we were part of a community, one that spread out over the world, working for the greater good – to save the earth.

Wonderful job with these programs. We were thrilled to partner with you and have your students model such a complete community approach to e-waste management.
