XPERIENCE SUSTAINABILITY

ADNEC Sustainability Week

The members of the Green School Audit made a visit to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) on the 16th of January, 2018 in connection with the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.  Selected students from grades 6 – 11 accompanied by the teachers Ms. Babitha, Ms.Usha Kumari, and Ms. Praseeda were part of the trip. Our objective was experiential learning through the exhibition on innovative programmes of some of the leading global companies.

Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW), the largest sustainability gathering in the Middle East, is dedicated to broadening our understanding of the major social, economic and environmental trends shaping the world’s sustainable development, and to empowering the global community to realise viable and effective strategies to mitigate climate change. The program works for three main aspects: Leadership- encouraging world’s future sustainable leaders, Business- providing an international platform for the introduction of innovative ideas, and Awareness- reaching out to engage students and public audience to the existing crisis.

Our trip was part of The Student Exclusive which is one of the kind of youth-oriented event during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW). It features an exciting programme which focuses on sustainability and offers creative activities to inspire students’ involvement in renewable energy advancement and raise awareness about sustainable development.

We were welcomed by a splendid and informative talk on Environmental and self-sustainability related to agriculture by Dr. Majid Al Qassimi from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment.  We were then directed to the arena where  entrepreneurs and business companies presented various pioneering, modern and ecological projects which are quite applicable in our day to day life. Some projects were: a baby air purifier, a handy energy harvesting module using kinetic energy, fabric using colours extracted from bacteria, eco-friendly houses made from waste generated, ink extracted from algae, micro herb fridge, plant in-vivo sensing technology, higher efficiency compressors and batteries, and what not! We also witnessed cutting edge Japanese technology related to mobility ranging from batteries and compressors to robots and space-bots.

The trip was one of its kind, informative and educative which trickled into us all the experience of communicating and sharing sustainable ideas with global entrepreneurs, for a greener and better future. We returned, filled with a sense of global and environmental awareness coupled with an initiative to take up the responsibility of setting up new targets and aims to be achieved in school with an effort to make it eco-friendly.  We also learned that if you respect nature and care for her, she will return in abundance.
