Dr. Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Awards 2017

Dr. Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Awards 2017

The Roots & Shoots award ceremony was unlike any experience we’ve had in our lives. The event on 12th January 2017 at Park Hyatt on Sadiyat Island, was attended by an 8 member team representing the school comprising of: Gauri Vinona and Rumaysa Jafer of Grade 9, Surabhi Chandra of Grade 8, Dinesh Karthik, Sankalp Malela and Adithya Sathyanath of Grade 7 and teachers, Mrs. Usha Kumari and Mrs. Janarajani Malalagama.  The excitement amongst us all was tangible. Dr. Jane Goodall, the famous environmentalist, delivered a speech about environmental consciousness that was truly motivating and thought provoking. Each of the participating schools had marvelous displays of articles made from trash and recycled materials.

Each School’s pavilion was visited by Dr. Jane Goodall and everyone complimented us on our displays. This made us extremely happy and boosted our confidence. We presented a short skit called ‘Treasure in Trash’ that all those present at the event, enjoyed.

Once the participating schools had presented their displays, we were handed our awards, which consisted of certificates, a trophy, and a signed copy of her book. Subsequently, we were taken to the beach at Sadiyat Island to understand the dire situation of turtles in an obstacle course. There was also a treasure hunt on the beach. It was an experience we won’t forget anytime soon. The boys particularly enjoyed the beach visit immensely.

We got to interact with a large variety of people and everyone, both, those managing the event and those participating were tremendously polite. It was truly a once in a lifetime experience. It made us feel more responsible for Mother Earth and motivated us to incorporate sustainability in every aspect of our lives.
