Bee Farm Visit

My two younger brothers, Ben, Matt, my dad, Philip, and I attended the Bee Keeping Workshop at the Sustainable City Dubai on Thursday, January 12th, 2022. The meeting started at 10am and went till past 1:30pm.
We all enjoyed the workshop very much. Ms. Mariam who is an expert bee keeper with many years of experience was our instructor and her assistant lady was very helpful teaching the honey tasting and candle making training.
We learned a lot. Bee keeping involves taking care of bees, learnign about bees and much more. There are many species of bees and there are many types of bees in every hive. There is a queen bee, male drone bees, and worker bees. Bees make their hives out of bee wax, and they make their honey with nector. The worker bees fan the nector in the hive with their wings. The queen bee lays all the eggs in the hive.
The bee keeper humans use moke to calm the bees down before opening the hives. Ms. Mariam gave us all bee suits. My brothers and I came to the bee hive place and we did many activities taught by Ms. Mariam and her assistant teacher.
First I did the honey tasting lesson. There were 5 types of honey. One was a fake. We had to taste the honey, see their colour and how they flow and smell them and figure out which one was fake. After that I did the candle making lesson. We put a wick string and poured scents in the rubber mould, and then poured hot melted bee wax in it. The third activity we did was to open the bee hives and look at the bees inside. Ms. Mariam used smoke to calm the bees down. After the bees had calmed down, we also got to handle a male drone bee in our hands and I was careful not to squish it.
My brothers, dad and I had a lot of fun and so did all my friends from ADHSA.

Thank you for making this opportunity possible to learn about bee keeping. We learned many things about bees through a short presentation by the host. Then we visited some hives and saw the bees house. We had a lot of fun making scented candles from beeswax. the environment was welcoming and informative. Looking forward to visit them again. – Adel & Omar Aljerjawi
